Pouring rain and cool temperatures could not stop Endicott women’s soccer from defeating Emerson 1-0 Thursday night. The Gulls dominated chances throughout the game, and a 76th minute winner from Gabrielle Klindtworth propelled them to victory. Endicott’s defense proved its strength once again, allowing only two shots on goal and recording their fourth shutout of the season in just five games.
A constant downpour soaked the field, players, and spectators, and it stayed constant from start to finish. From the first whistle, Endicott carried possession and created scoring opportunities throughout the first half. Between the wet conditions and a strong Lion defense, the Gulls could not find the back of the net.
As the first half dwindled down, the Gulls’ attack produced immense pressure. With ten seconds left in the half, the ball was crossed into the box. The Emerson goalkeeper made a save, and one second after the buzzer sounded, Endicott followed the rebound and scored. The officials did not count the goal, leaving the score 0-0 at halftime.
The Gulls carried this momentum into the second half. Scoring chances were piling up, and it was only a matter of time before they finished one. An Emerson defender cleared the ball off the goal line. Directly following that, the goalie saved a beautiful shot to keep the game tied. The Gulls could not catch a break.
In the 76th minute, Klindtworth won possession back. She carried the ball towards the opposing goal, and from about 20 yards out, she bent a phenomenal shot into the top-right corner of the net. Her first goal of the season was a massive one, and celebration commenced as the long awaited Endicott goal finally surfaced.
This goal proved to be enough. The Endicott defense, led by Carly Matthews and Angelina Venditti playing the full 90 minutes, held off a desperate Emerson attack as time ran out.
Endicott improved to 4-1 on the season after this victory, with Emerson falling to 1-4. The Gulls look to carry this momentum into Saturday’s game away against Nichols, their opener in CCC play.
