BEVERLY, Mass. - Endicott women’s volleyball defeated Plymouth State in three straight sets at home Wednesday night to improve to 14-5 overall on the season.
In the non-conference game, the Gulls won the sets 25-15, 25-23, and 25-17 in a dominant victory over a strong Panthers team.
Endicott showed their strength right from the start, jumping to an early 10-3 lead, forcing a Plymouth State timeout. The Panthers never got within four points, and Endicott took set one 25-15.
Endicott dominated the set at every level. Three Gulls recording aces from the service line, and their pressure at the net, both attacking and blocking, overwhelmed Plymouth State.
The second set showed that it would be a highly competitive game the rest of the way, despite Endicott cruising to an easy first set victory. Both teams traded points for the first half of this set, with Plymouth State having an early edge.
The Panthers then went on a big run, extending their lead to 18-12 and causing an Endicott timeout. It looked as though the match would be tied 1-1 heading into the third frame.
Whatever Head Coach Tim Byram said in the Endicott timeout clearly worked. The Gulls went on a massive 8-2 run to tie the match at 20 apiece. A massive kill from outside hitter Hadley Helenbrook gave Endicott the edge 25-23 to go ahead 2-0.
In the third set, it was a quick start from Endicott that sealed the victory. They got ahead four points early, and from that point, Plymouth State was never able to get within three points. The Gulls handed the Panthers just their second loss of the season.
Endicott’s attack was paced by Helenbrook with 18 kills. The reigning CNE Player of the Week stayed hot in this matchup, averaging a whopping six kills a set in this match. Ava Grace Dresback, the team’s other outside hitter, added 8 kills of her own.
Freshman setter Hannah Maguire recorded her 10th double-double of the season, with 40 assists and 10 digs. Libero Emma Ruel had a match high 16 digs and led the back row.
As a team, the Gulls dominated the Panthers with over double the hitting percentage and triple the blocks of their opponents.
With this win, Endicott is now riding an eight game winning streak they will look to continue against Hartford on Saturday, October 19. This match is Senior Day.
Plymouth State had a seven game winning streak snapped with this loss. They will look to rebound against Castleton on Saturday.
