BEVERLY, Mass. - Endicott women’s soccer defeated Suffolk in a penalty shootout to advance to the CNE championship match.
Endicott dominated play through 90 minutes but were unable to find the back of the net. Despite outshooting the Rams 15-3 in regulation and putting 6 shots on frame, the game remained scoreless after 90 minutes.
The game entered overtime, which is a golden goal period, meaning the first team to score wins. Endicott nearly did just that behind the foot of Madeline Barbieri, who hit the crossbar on a shot from distance.
Barbieri had the most quality chance from either team across overtime, and the game remained scoreless, meaning penalty shootouts were next.
The Gulls failed to connect on either of their first two penalty kicks, and with the Rams scoring one, Endicott found themselves in a hole early.
The Gulls came alive in this penalty shootout, scoring four straight penalties, coming from Rhiann Dugan, Alyssa McColl, Gabrielle Klindtworth, and Olivia Pardo.
Klindtworth slotted her penalty as the fifth taker, tying up the shootout 3-3. Suffolk had a shot that, if they scored, would advance them to the CNE Championship. Goalkeeper Samantha McCormack had other plans, diving the right way and saving the ball to keep Endicott’s season alive.
Pardo scored a huge penalty as the sixth taker, and the Rams’ shooter put the ball over the crossbar, sending Endicott to the CNE Championship in dramatic fashion.
With the win, Endicott, the second seed in the CNE, will head to the University of Hartford on Saturday, November 8, for the championship match.
