BEVERLY, Mass. - Endicott Women’s Soccer came away with a hard fought 2-1 victory over Wheaton College on Wednesday at Hempstead Stadium.
It was a slow start for the Gulls, falling behind under five minutes into the contest. Despite the slow start, Endicott settled in and began to control the game.
The Gulls outshot Wheaton 6-5 in the first half, but they were unable to break through and equalize the match. They remained trailing by a goal entering the final 45 minutes.
It did not take long for Endicott to get level with the Lyons. In the 53rd minute, Rhiann Dugan drew a penalty kick, and senior Alyssa McColl buried it to tie the game 1-1.
Endicott was even more dominant in the second half, carrying a clear majority of possession and holding Wheaton to just a single shot.
Endicott was knocking on the door for 20 minutes, but they did not break through until the 78th minute. Winger Sofia Agudelo whipped in a cross that was buried by Emma Spear to give the Gulls a 2-1 lead.
The defense held strong for the final 12 minutes, and Endicott came away with a gritty victory in the rain.
The game winning goal was extra special for Spear and Agudelo, as it was their first goal and assist, respectively.
This win continued a hot streak for the Gulls under new head coach Lauren Pien. In her first season, despite an 0-4 start, she has Endicott 4-0-1 in their last five, and they now sit with a .500 record on the season.
Endicott looks to keep this streak going with a CNE matchup against the Hartford Hawks at Hempstead Stadium. The game will be played at 12 PM on Saturday, September 27.
Wheaton looks to bounce back on Saturday with an away matchup against Clark University.
