BEVERLY, Mass. - No. 20 nationally ranked Endicott men’s volleyball swept Elms College 3-0 with set scores of 25-12, 25-13, and 25-22 in their first home contest of the season.
The first set showed how the rest of the contest would go. It was back and forth to start the game, with the Gulls leading 8-6. Aaron Bennett took control from the service line, putting immense pressure on the opponents with a topspin serve, scoring 9 straight points and blowing the score open to a 17-6 lead.
The Gulls cruised the rest of the set, closing it out 25-12. Endicott was clearly the better team in the first set, and they rotated the lineup for set two. This proved to not make a difference, as they dominated every facet of the game, winning the second set 25-13.
Endicott continued to get everyone involved, with 19 different players seeing game action in the contest. The third set was much more competitive, but some three kills late in the game from freshman Ethan Norris, as well as a service ace for match point, propelled the Gulls to victory.
Jake Laborde led the team in kills and digs, with 7 and 6 respectively. Norris contributed 5 kills of his own, hitting .444 on the day. He added 4 assists and 2 service aces as well. Jackson Gray added 5 kills as well, while Thomas Matchett contributed a match-high 4 blocks. Matty Tiernan facilitated the offense with 25 assists.
Endicott was impressive in holding Elms to a negative hitting percentage. Serving pressure and strong attacks from the Gulls all game made running an offense tough for their opponent.
The Gulls are off to a hot 8-3 start to the season. They look to build on this record as they host SUNY Poly on Saturday, February 21 at 7 PM.
Elms looks to rebound against a tough nationally ranked MIT squad on Friday, February 20.
