BEVERLY, Mass. - Endicott men’s soccer defeated No. 12 nationally ranked WPI Saturday afternoon 1-0 at Hempstead Stadium.
The Gulls entered this match with a losing record, while the Goats were on an 18 match unbeaten streak. Despite being heavy underdogs on paper, Endicott battled for a shutout victory.
Endicott jumped out of the gate with high energy and carried play to start the game. This intensity led to a goal just 18 minutes in from junior Conor Rooney. He tucked a shot into the bottom right corner off an exceptional through ball from teammate Aidan Sheehan.
The Gulls had all the momentum, but less than five minutes following the goal, they conceded a penalty kick. Despite a decent attempt from WPI, sophomore goalie Michael McDonough made an exceptional save to keep the Gulls in front.
Endicott entered halftime with a 1-0 lead, and coming out of the break, WPI had a renewed energy in their attack. The Gulls were on their heels defending the entire half with relentless pressure coming their way.
Despite facing 15 second half shots, the Endicott defense held strong and pulled away with a 1-0 victory. McDonough’s performance in goal was enough to earn him CNE Defensive Player of the Week.
This marked Endicott’s first win over a ranked opponent since 2016, handing WPI their first loss of the season.
The Gulls have another test ahead, facing off against No. 6 nationally ranked Middlebury College on Tuesday at Hempstead Stadium.
WPI looks to bounce back in a big way, as they host Amherst, the top ranked team in the nation.
