BEVERLY, Mass. - Endicott field hockey defeated Western New England 3-2 in double overtime in the CNE Semifinal match.
The game was in a deadlock for much of the first half, until with just under a minute to play in the half, Lily Johnson scored on a rebound to put the Gulls up 1-0.
The Endicott lead did not last long, as WNE equalized the game early in the third quarter. Both teams battled for the remainder of the quarter until under three minutes to play, when Tori Swanson scored to give Endicott the 2-1 advantage.
The Gulls held strong for a majority of the final quarter until around five minutes left in the game, when Western New England scored the equalizer to level the score at 2-2.
The game remained at a standstill the entire first overtime period. Endicott goalkeeper Faith Minickene made three saves in the extra frame to help keep the Gulls alive.
The game went into a second overtime period. Just over 30 seconds into the period, and after over 70 minutes of field hockey played, Endicott earned a penalty stroke. Riley Perkins put it away, and Endicott secured a 3-2 victory and a berth in the CNE Championship.
Minickene made 12 saves on the night, her second highest total on the season. The Gulls had numerous players play the entire 71 minutes of the game.
Endicott tied the program record with 19 wins on the season. The No. 8 team in the country has a chance to break that record as they host Roger Williams on Saturday, November 8, for the CNE Championship game.
